With Scale Rapid, your data will be annotated by Scale. With Scale Studio, you are bringing your own annotation workforce, and Scale Studio is a platform to manage your annotation project and annotation workforce.
Not at all! When you start with Scale Studio, you can choose to switch your annotation projects to Scale Rapid later with just a few clicks.
Definitely. If you have certain projects that you want to label with your own workforce and others that you’d like to label with Scale’s workforce, you can easily choose which product you’d like to create your project with.

There is a free tier that provides a complimentary amount of annotation, and you can pay-as-you-go for anything exceeding that amount.
To access additional features, you can upgrade to Teams or Pro tiers, or contact our sales team for Enterprise capabilities.
Every time one of your annotators applies a label of any kind, that is considered a Labeling Unit.
There are some exceptions on the conversion of annotations to Labeling Units (e.g., in video annotation and LIDAR / 3D annotation). Visit the Studio homepage (https://scale.com/studio) to learn more about our pricing structure.
No! Every tier, including our Free tier, includes unlimited annotation team members. You only get charged for the work that your annotators complete.
No! Studio is completely self-serve and you can label as much, or as little data as you would like.
Studio supports general image annotation, 2D semantic segmentation, text collection, document transcription, named entity recognition, video playback annotation, and LIDAR (3D) annotation.
There's a high likelihood the Studio platform can be configured to support your use case.
In particular, text collection is our most general task type and may work for your use case through the use of presentation templates. Presentation templates allow you to build any task from scratch in markdown via CSV upload where each row corresponds to a task and each column corresponds to some type of attachment (text, image, link, etc) that will be displayed within the task.
Reach out via chat or scale_studio@scale.com and we'd be happy to discuss your use case.
Calibration Batch: The intention of a calibration batch is to get feedback from your labelers on the instructions you have left for them before you scale up labeling volumes. This is an opportunity for labelers to tell you where your instructions might be unclear - or if there is additional information you need to specify to help them produce better labels. You can submit as many calibration batches until you feel your instructions are in a comprehensive spot.
Regular Batch: A regular batch is what you would typically create once you feel confident in your project set-up and you are ready to get your data labeled!
You do not have to submit a calibration batch if you feel your labelers are already well familiarized on how to label your data.*
